9 Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group Tips for Disneyland

The Rise of the Resistance Ride in Disneyland and Walt Disney World is the the newest ride in the U. S Disney parks. It is extremely popular (as its the most technically advanced ride in the world at the moment and worth all the hype). Unfortunately, the popularity of the ride also can make it difficult to obtain a boarding pass for the ride. If you are only going 'once in a lifetime' to Disneyland, you want to make your visit count and experience this ride. This blog post is for you.

An enormous thankyou to Dennis Chang from the Facebook group ‘Disney Fans & Annual Passholders' for providing these comprehensive instructions on how to increase your chances to get a Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group.

Want to board the Disneyland Anaheim ride ‘Rise of the Resistance’? Did you know that the boarding passes of this ride can be booked out within 5 minutes of Disneyland opening?

Follow these 9 tips and important things to consider below to ensure you have the best possible chance of gaining a boarding pass to this amazing ride.

1. What sort of ride is it?
It is part trackless dark ride, part motion simulator and includes a drop on the ride. The ride puts guests into the middle of an altercation between the Resistance and the First Order.

2.  Boarding passes are obtained electronically from the Disneyland app.
They are ONLY available when the park normally opens (published opening time). Typically 8 am or 9 am.

My example below is for an 8am opening time.

Early Magic Hour does not count.

All members of a group have to have had their tickets scanned at the turnstiles of DISNEYLAND ONLY. California Adventure Park doesn't count.

3. There is no advantage to showing up excessively early.
Since no one can get the Boarding Group until 8:00 am the implication is that there is NO ADVANTAGE to showing up excessively early like 5:00 am as some people report getting there. Your ONLY job is to get through the turnstiles BEFORE 8:00 am. However you have to take into account parking, security, and the LINE to get into Disneyland itself which all take time. You only have one shot at this per day so you don't want to cut it TOO close.

EXAMPLE: For an opening time of 8:00 am - I got to Disneyland by 6:40am and after parking and security I was in line by 6:50 am. By then there were already tons of people in line. Unfortunately Disneyland decided NOT to let people in extra early. At 7:11 a.m. they finally began to process tickets. It took me about 15 minutes to get in. I would advise to be safe that you plan to get in line to get through the turnstiles by around 7:00 a.m. If they let people in earlier then you walk in and you are very early which is fine. But in my opinion there are too many odd variables where they let people in late on some days to cut it too close. I guess standard protocol is to start admitting through the turnstiles by 7:15 a.m. but if you plan on getting there by 7:15 a.m. expect a few hundred people ahead of you in line. You should still make it in with plenty of time but understand it will be tighter. You might be processed by 7:40 or later depending on how fast the person taking tickets is and how slow the people in front of you are with their passes, phone tickets, etc, etc.

4. Once you are in the park, take the time to open the app and check things.
Make sure ALL people in your group have their tickets scanned into the app. All this does is streamline things so when it's GO time you don't waste precious seconds checking or unchecking people who should and shouldn't be there. It is CRITICAL that all members of your group have their tickets scanned into the app. I'm not sure if this matters or not but I would NOT set up any Max Pass or mobile ordering via the app during this time period.

5. No Wi-Fi. Use cellular signal only.
Wi-Fi in Disneyland is patchy at best. Stick to your mobile data only for this exercise.
Also be sure to have a power pack because there is no telling how long you may have to wait before your boarding group is called and your phone may run out of juice!

6. As opening time approaches (this example, 8am)
Most important part coming up. As 8:00 am approaches, OPEN the app and navigate to the LAST button at the bottom. The symbol is a LIST with 3 short horizontal bars. It will take you to the page with Tickets and Passes, My plans, Photos etc*. On that page you will also see a tab for STAR WARS: Galaxy's Edge. Pressing that tab will take you automatically to the Rise of the Resistance page which will have TWO buttons on the bottom: My STATUS and JOIN BOARDING GROUP. Obviously before 8:00 am you will not be able to press JOIN BOARDING GROUP.

So here is my advice for the fastest way to get a boarding group. Your mileage may vary and there are certainly other ways to go about it. There is also a pretty big element of luck to all this as well.

Navigate again to the page where you see Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. The minute you see the timer hit 8:00 am, immediately press that tab. It will take you to the Rise of the Resistance Tab where one of two things will occur. ONE: the Join Boarding Group button is active. PRESS IT!! TWO: the Join Boarding Group button is NOT active. That means you may have pressed a little too early. IMMEDIATELY hit My STATUS button. it will load another page with only ONE button: JOIN BOARDING GROUP. That button WILL be active. PRESS IT!! Some people advocate waiting 1 or 2 seconds after 8:00 hits to access the Rise of the Resistance page to give the Join Boarding Group button to activate but I find timing a little tricky personally. The common theme seems to be NOT to press too quickly as that may lead to a time lag that hurts more than helps.  I think hitting the tab as soon as possible and then hitting My status as a backup does the same thing with more reliable timing then waiting 2 seconds.

BE AWARE after you hit JOIN BOARDING GROUP you may need to wait a few seconds and THERE WILL BE FURTHER BUTTONS THAT DEMAND YOUR ATTENTION. Two of them in fact confirming that you want to proceed and confirming the party members in your group. Be prepared to hit those buttons as soon as possible.

After a few seconds delay you will get a boarding group number. If you follow these instructions perfectly, barring a glitch which you can't control, you will almost certainly get a boarding group. I got boarding pass 36 this morning which is pretty good. But understand that there will inevitably be some lottery style luck involved when thousands of people hit the button simultaneously.

One final thing. Even after getting a boarding group you aren't out of the woods yet. The ride is pretty finicky and can break down often. It takes a minimum of 1 hour to reset it if it does. There was a 3 hour delay today and I wound up going on at 2:45 pm when normally I should have been called from 11-Noon. The ride also didn't start loading today until almost 10 a.m.
Hopefully things will go more smoothly in the future, the ride will break down less, and there will be a more generous window to get boarding groups in the future. But for now this is what we have to deal with. GOOD LUCK and May the Force be with you!

7. What if you get a back up boarding pass? What does this mean?
Guests may be assigned to a ‘backup’ boarding group. Backup boarding groups are only called if all previous boarding groups have been called and there is extra capacity for additional Guests.

Being assigned to a boarding group does not guarantee you get to ride ‘Ride of the Resistance’ as its subject to capacity. In general, it seems the first 100 boarding groups usually get to ride Rise of the Resistance, but this is a very rough number. The lower the boarding group number, the more chance you have of riding it.

8. Once your boarding group is called what happens next?
The app will notify you when you can start boarding the ride. You have 2 hours to get there. Make sure you allow push notifications too on your app.
Also note that you do not have to stay at the park the entire day. You can leave and get a pass out to get back into the park.

9. Is this information applicable to Walt Disney Worlds Disney Hollywood Studio?
Quite possibly. They also have an app (My Disney Experience), that you can only access the Rise of the Resistance virtual queue once the park is open and you are inside the park. The actual pressing buttons and screens on your phone page will be different though.

Summary

Many thanks again to Dennis Chang from the Facebook Group ‘Disney Fans & Annual Passholders’ on his tips on how to get a ‘Rise of the Resistance’ Boarding Group.

Please note that these notes are current tips, which may change whenever Disneyland changes its boarding pass strategy. Always check the current Disneyland website for updates.

These tips are also primarily for Disneyland Anaheim, not Walt Disney World, although there are some common tips for both, such as to be inside the gates at opening time, use mobile data not Wi-Fi and having your boarding group members already set up on the app before hitting 'Join Boarding Group'.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog and you get a chance to ride the 'Rise of the Resistance'.
