We got engaged at Disneyland Paris – this is how we did it!

Disneyland Paris Marriage Proposal in front of castle

This week we have a Guest Post from Gillian author from https://gillian-alexandra.blogspot.com/. Gillian and her fiancé Shaun are a couple from Dundee, Scotland whom enjoy traveling and visiting theme parks. In 2017 her partner proposed to her in Disneyland Paris (DLP) around Christmas. This is their story.

Amongst other theme parks, we have also traveled to Disneyland Anaheim and Disney California Adventure Park. We have been many times to Disneyland Paris.

Where did you stay in Paris?
When we visited Disneyland Paris we stayed at the Radisson Blu, just a short ten minute drive away from the parks.  The hotel has a shuttle bus which runs every 15 minutes to and from the park so you never have to wait long.  The staff at the hotel were great, our two friends were due to arrive the same day (unbeknown to me because they all managed to keep it a secret!) and when Shaun mentioned to the receptionist that they were coming to surprise me, they upgraded us for free and put us in rooms right opposite each other! Shaun just told me at the time that he’d paid to upgrade us to a nicer room!

The hotel had a lovely pool as well, our room had bathrobes and slippers so that we could just head straight down without needing to use the changing rooms which was awesome! The pool was indoors and heated and there was a jacuzzi as well so it was perfect for heating us all up at the end of a cold day! Being Scottish we’re used to the colder temperatures and it was alright when we were walking about but we were literally freezing our butts off watching the stunt show at Walt Disney Studios and had to go and get a hot chocolate afterwards to warm up! [Paris weather in December is cold and wet. There is a chance of snow too. Average temperatures 8°Celsius and 3°Celsius at night].

Eurostar or Fly?
Our friends took the Eurostar train and we flew by plane – apparently they chose to go by train because there was less chance of bumping into us on the flight or at the airport!  And to be fair by the time you added up all the time we spent traveling to the airport, waiting for our flight, flying over and getting from the airport to the hotel, their journey really wasn’t that much longer than ours! Thankfully because we live in the UK the time difference is only an hour so no jetlag!

There is a bigger baggage allowance on the Eurostar though and sometimes price wise the Eurostar can be cheaper then flying (but we were flying from Scotland so it was cheaper to fly direct then catch the Eurostar by about £300).

Favourite Rides?
Both our favourite rides are at the Walt Disney Studios park, mine is Crush’s Coaster just because it’s so different with it being mostly indoors and in the dark and Shaun’s is Aerosmith’s Rockin’ Rollercoaster because he likes the launch and the music, however both of us love Big Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean as well!

How busy were the parks around Christmas?
Both parks were super busy and the restaurants/cafes were absolutely mobbed but I don’t remember having to wait overly long for any of the rides, I would say no more than an hour. We didn’t have a particular strategy or anything, we just made good use of the app which tells you the estimated wait time of all the rides.

The Disney Proposal
Disneyland Paris is always going to be a special place for us because it’s where Shaun proposed to me! I thought the surprise of that trip was our friends turning up at our hotel room but Shaun had an even bigger surprise planned the next day!

We headed into the park on the Saturday and just before we went for lunch, Shaun suggested we go to the castle to get some pictures.  We took our friends’ pictures and then it was their turn to take our pictures.  All of a sudden Shaun pointed over to my left and said “look, there’s Mickey!” – so of course I looked – and when I turned back round he was down on one knee holding the ring!! Cue lots of (happy) tears! And I said “Yes” of course. One of our friends was taking photos and the other was filming – turns out that both of them had known about it for weeks and that was the reason that they came to Disneyland Paris!

The hotel was fantastic. Our friends had told them what Shaun had planned and they left us a bottle of champagne in our room and made a couple of swans in a loveheart shape out of towels and left it on our bed!

Disneyland at Christmas Time
I would definitely recommend going to Disneyland Paris around Christmas time because the whole place is just magical.  The castle twinkles and there are Christmas lights everywhere, and because it gets dark earlier it makes the parade look absolutely amazing.  I loved the fire breathing dragon!  We were slightly disappointed when it came to the fireworks though because we got a really good spot down Main Street but because it was so foggy that day we hardly saw any of the projections and once the fireworks started we saw nothing because of the smoke!  It was ok for us because we’d seen them before but we felt sorry for our friends because it was their first time and they couldn’t see them! So if its foggy – don’t watch the fireworks – go on more rides instead.

Disneyland Paris Castle
We have been to Disneyland in Anaheim as well and that was a completely different experience (a LOT warmer for one thing!) but DLP will always have a place in our hearts because of that wonderful proposal!

I hope you enjoyed reading about Disneyland Paris. Thanks to Gillian and Shaun for sharing their story. They are hoping to get married in the Summer of 2021.
